If you are looking for a short but very rewarding hike close to Bend, Oregon then Tumalo Mountain is for you. Last week My wife and I set out to tackle this beautiful climb while the kids were still in school. The trail head is about 20 minutes from town and can be found at the Dutchman Flat Sno-Park parking lot (google map location).
Although the hike is only 4 miles in total, the views are absolutely stunning. To the west you see the fullness of Mt. Bachelor Ski Area. To the north the views include Broken Top Mountain and the Three Sisters. To the east is the high desert plateau with Bend, several small buttes and ridges dotting the horizon.
Although the hike is a short 2 miles to the summit from the parking lot, several sections are quite steep. If you have hiking poles, I’d recommend them but they are not necessary. The parking lot can be quite busy during holidays but the majority of time there are just a handful of cars in the lot. if you want to do this in the winter, remember to bring your parking permit. You can get one on your way up by stopping at the new Cascade Lakes Welcome Center.
Here’s a few pics from our outing plus some additional view shots so you can see what it’s like when not smokey.

Only about .5 miles left. Still smiling!
Mt. Bachelor Ski Area to the west. So Smokey.
Just before summit. On a clear day there’s glorious mountain views to the north.
